In this article she talks about how novels are adapted into film and are now becoming popular adaptations for television too. There are many pros and cons to making a story into a novels and into a television show. They are hard to compare which is better. The question asked by the author of this article is how can we get the same literary elements from novels into a television show? Like I said before, there are pros and cons to both television and novels. Some pros in T.V. are the way you can show what is happening physically without dialogue and how dead air can lead to dramatic suspense for the audience. However, there are cons to television too. Cons such as not being able to describe and show the audience what each character is thinking and feeling during the scenes. That is one of the upsides to novels is the feelings that are articulated. But not being able to hold out a scene and build the dramatic effect through dead air or silence is one of the cons to reading novels opposed to T.V.
Many think if a film is based off a book it loses some of the important plot and dialogue from the book. This is true for most cases since it is difficult to fit the same amount of detail from a three hundred page book into a two hour movie. This raises the question of whether or not that can be avoided. I think that a novel will always be able to have more detail to a story than a film or television show. Even though the book might have more detail that doesn’t mean the film won’t have the same feeling and aftereffect of the novel. A film can display the same mood and give the story the same feeling the reader loved when reading the book. This is, in my opinion, just more difficult to accomplish on the filming spectrum due to the limited time and point of view. Overall I think both film or television and novels can tell stories in each different, great ways but might not be good to change the original.
