This article is opinion based but also looks at technical aspects when ranking the best films of this year, 2017. It lists ten films and a short synopsis of each. I do not think that these films are ranked best to worst or vice-versa but instead is an overall top ten list. The list begins with the movie raw, a gory horror movie about a young cannibal. The list then continues to similar movies such as get out, another horror. What is interesting about this list is it goes on to films like The leveling, and The red turtle. These films are on love and are dramas. This is interesting because they do not fit in with the movies raw and get out.
This list shows a wide variety of movie genres that are all a part of the top ten. This is a perfect example to explain that not all great movies have to be under a certain category. This is where the academy awards seems to be wrong. The academy awards have been getting backlash the past few years because of their prejudices of different genres. Most of the time best picture for the Oscars is going to be a dramatic film over other genres like horror or comedy. This is not too surprising because it is easier to analyze dramas and to see their technical beauty than other movies but it could still be seen as unfair. Even some films that are dramas do not get a fair look at by the academy judges. Films, like straight outta compton which is a drama, are often overlooked by the academy. This is purely because of the average age of a judge. Most judges for the Oscars, along with other shows, are older and are not the young kids that would go to watch movies such as Straight Outta Compton. This can be solved by adding more variety of people to judge for the academy awards. This would make it a more fair assessment for the best picture. Yes, the judges should be qualified and know enough about film to have that honor but there must be a variety in age, race, and religion to really be fair.
